Alaska adds 2 new Honolulu routes, drops Auckland

Alaska Airlines Expands Hawaiian Horizons but Grounds Auckland Adventures
With a view towards aligning services with travel demand, Alaska Airlines has charted a new course for its Hawaiian routes, enhancing connectivity with the Pacific Northwest but bidding farewell to New Zealand's landscapes.
Fresh Hawaiian Air Links
In a move sure to excite travelers from the Pacific Northwest, Alaska Airlines has announced two new routes originating from Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Starting December, daily flights will link Honolulu with Idaho's Boise Airport, and weekly Saturday flights will connect to Spokane International in Washington. Both routes aim to leverage the potent capabilities of Boeing 737 Max aircraft, offering more travel options directly to these smaller cities.
The Curtain Falls on Auckland
Concurrent with its Pacific Northwest expansion, Alaska Airlines has decided to discontinue its Honolulu to Auckland service. Initially launched in 2013, this route won't be resumed, freeing up fleet capacity now poised to serve new peak-period routes to Las Vegas.
Strategic Shifts in Airspace
These route adjustments underscore Alaska Airlines' strategic response post-merger with Hawaiian Airlines, repositioning itself to compete robustly with major U.S. airlines by becoming a global player. This pivot reflects efforts to better match services to evolving market demands while still maintaining global connectivity through its Oneworld alliance partners.
"We are creating the fourth global airline in our country to compete against the Big 3,"
Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci
