Jesse Jackson’s lyrical swagger and political ‘juice’ resonates as students learn about his legacy

Jesse Jackson: Inspiring New Generations with His Undeniable 'Swagger' and 'Juice'
At King College Prep High School in Chicago, Rev. Jesse Jackson's formidable legacy continues to resonate with students, capturing their imaginations and inspiring them to reach beyond their immediate circumstances.
A Lesson in Leadership
In the wake of Rev. Jesse Jackson's death, social science teacher Erik Young facilitated a deep dive into the civil rights leader's life. For students like Raqeebat Bankole, learning about Jackson's words, "I was born in the slum, but the slum wasn't born in me," sparked a new understanding—that environment doesn't dictate success.
Discovering the Power of 'Juice'
As students explored Jackson’s fearless advocacy and poetic speeches, many were captivated by his ability to effect change without holding political office. His 'juice'—a term students used to express his influence—highlighted Jackson's impact on both domestic and international fronts.
Echoes of a Visionary
Through interactive discussions and historical imagery, the students at King College Prep recognized Jackson's indelible contributions to civil rights, infused with the spirit of resilience and hope. They left inspired to pave their own paths and take actionable steps within their communities.
"It will make me want to do more, especially as a Black youth," said student Damiyah Eberhart, reflecting the newfound zeal ignited by these lessons.
