Through a comprehensive study of 159,347 participants over three decades, those adhering to the DASH diet reported significantly better cognitive health scores.
Hidden in Plain Sight
Unlike the Mediterranean diet's flexibility, the DASH diet prioritizes low salt, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and low-fat dairy, and demands limited consumption of added sugars, red meats, and alcohol. This regimented approach results in a 41% lower risk of subjective cognitive decline among its most faithful followers.
Broader Implications
These findings bolster the concept that diet can play a crucial role in preventing neurological diseases linked to aging, such as Alzheimer's. While the relationship requires further exploration through randomized trials, consistently aligning dietary habits with heart-healthy principles appears pivotal for brain health as well.
"Any dietary pattern that emphasizes vegetables, fish, and whole grains while limiting red and processed meats aligns with cognitive health recommendations," says lead study author, Harvard epidemiologist Kjetil Bjornevik.
